Faculty and Students at the Koh Lab
Dr. Amanda KohDr. Amanda Koh joined the faculty of the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at UA in August 2018. Previously she did her post-doctoral fellowship at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, got her Ph.D. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, and her B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is originally from Brooklyn, New York.

Graduate Students
Elizabeth BuryElizabeth Bury has been a member of Dr. Koh’s Lab since Fall 2018. In December 2020, she graduated magna cum laude from The University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. During her time as an undergraduate, Elizabeth was involved in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, Omega Chi Epsilon, and Phi Eta Sigma. For her research as an undergraduate in the Koh Lab, she has received the Future Leaders in Chemical Engineering Symposium Award in 2020, the 2020 Alexander Stanton Memorial Undergraduate Research Award, the 2020 Randall Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award, and was selected as a finalist in 2019 and 2020 for the Society of Women Engineers collegiate undergraduate research competitions. In Spring 2021, she returned to the Koh Lab as a graduate student. Her research primarily focuses on utilizing liquid metal and polymeric materials to develop novel soft and stretchable electronic materials.

Anh HoangAnh Hoang began working in Dr. Koh's lab in August 2022. Anh received her Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry from the University of Mississippi. After graduation, Anh planned to shift her focus from theoretical scientific research to a multidisciplinary curriculum with a greater emphasis on practical application. As a result, she became a graduate student in the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering at the University of Alabama. Her research focuses on the properties of liquid metal to create soft and deformable electronics. Outside of the lab, Anh works as a freelance graphic designer.

Emmanual JohnsonEmmanual Johnson joined Dr. Koh’s Lab in Spring 2023. Emmanual gradated from the University of Alabama with his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. As an undergraduate, he was involved with many organizations including the National Society of Black Engineers and 100 Black Men of America, Inc. Outside of the lab, Emmanual enjoys playing tennis and engaging in hobbyist computer science.

Misturah OlaleyeMisturah joined Dr. Koh's lab in Fall 2024. She obtained her Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Misturah’s research focuses on engineering porous materials for water remediation. During her undergraduate studies, Misturah was actively involved in community outreach initiatives that promoted children's welfare and environmental sustainability. Beyond academia, she enjoys visiting new places, meeting new people, and a keen interest in Data Analytics.

Undergraduate Students
Sydney Aldrich Sydney Aldrich is a class of 2025 chemical engineering major with a minor in Randall Research Scholars Program. She joined Dr. Koh’s lab in the fall of 2022 and is studying novel surfactants for high internal phase emulsion polymer foams as water treatment technology. Outside of the lab, she is a member of the RRS intramural soccer and volleyball teams, the UA Chapter of the Forest Stewards Guild, and the UA Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Jamie DouglasJamie is a class of 2024 Chemistry Major, with minors in Psychology and Mathematics, on the pre-health track. She joined Dr. Koh’s lab in the Spring of 2023 and is studying the temperature dependence of electrical properties of various dispersions. Outside of the research, she is a member of the Million Dollar Band and the UA American Chemical Society. She also works as a licensed EMT and is a certified firefighter.

Johanna FentonJohanna Fenton is a class of 2024 Chemical Engineering major and Microbiology major. She joined Dr. Koh’s lab in the Spring of 2023 and is studying the synthesis of surfmers to remove pollutants from water. Outside of the lab, Johanna is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Society of Women in Engineering, and enjoys long-distance running outdoors.

Noah EdwardsNoah Edwards is a class of 2026 chemical engineering major. He joined Dr. Koh's lab in the spring of 2024 and is studying the development of material composites for use in a wearable breathing sensor. Outside of the lab, he is a discipleship group leader at Church at the Oaks, a trombonist in the Million Dollar Band and the University Band, and a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the UA Biomedical Engineering Society.

Milena MesfunMilena Mesfun is a class of 2027 Chemical Engineering major. She joined Dr. Koh's lab in the Spring of 2024 and is studying the characteristics of liquid metal polymer composites for future applications. Outside of the lab, Milena is a member of the Society of Women Engineers, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and is part of UA's Cooperative Education Program.

Ella MillerElla Miller is a class of 2027 chemical engineering major. She joined Dr. Koh’s lab in the spring of 2024 and is studying the optimization of emulsions to enhance magnetorheological fluids that can be applied to prosthetics and similar technology. Outside the lab, she is part of the the Witt University Fellows Program, a member of the Pre-Medical Society for Chemical Engineers, and a snare drummer in the Million Dollar Band.

Sarah MitchellSarah Mitchell is a class of 2026 Chemical Engineering major. She joined Dr. Koh’s lab in the Summer of 2024 and is studying the optimization of emulsions as additives in magnetorheological fluids for energy damping applications. Outside the lab, Sarah is a member of the Biomedical Engineering Society, AIChE, and the STEM Path to MBA. She enjoys playing volleyball and trivia.

Griffin BeasleyGriffin Beasley is a class of 2026 metallurgical engineering major with a minor in Randall Research Scholars Program. He joined Dr. Koh’s lab in the Fall of 2024 and is studying the mechanical properties of resultant elastomers that can be used in flexible electronics. Outside of the lab, he is a member of Materials Advantage/American Foundry Society, UA’s Fencing Club, and the RRS intramural soccer team.

Wyatt DumserWyatt Dumser is a Chemical Engineering major graduating in 2028. He is a member of the UA chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and is currently researching materials for stretchable electronics. Outside of the lab, he enjoys watching sports, specifically baseball, and is a huge Tide football and basketball fan.

Tyler DettmarTyler Dettmar is a class of 2026 chemical engineering major. He joined Dr. Koh's lab in fall of 2024 and is studying the formulation of non-aqueous emulsions. Outside of the lab, he is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, part of the STEM Path to MBA program, and a men's group leader for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He enjoys spending time outdoors and with his family.

Kate GlassKate Glass started in Dr. Koh's lab in Fall 2024. She is a Class of 2027 Chemical Engineering major in the honors college. In the lab, Kate studies polymeric films and is analyzing them for electrical properties. This work will be applied to flexible electronics in the future. Outside of the lab, she is a member of the Biomedical Engineering Society and AIChE. She enjoys participating in intramural sports and playing trivia.
